Artist Biography: Jay Haavik

Jay Haavik's work draws on themes from Viking and early Scandinavian style and Northwest Coast Native art forms. His media include wood, painting, prints, sculptured brick and fine furniture.

COMMISSIONS

Invited by The Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments to carve a replica of the Urnes Stave Church Portal at the Visitor's Center for the Borgund Stave Church, 2006.

Selected by the Leif Erikson International Foundation to design a new base and surrounding area for the relocation of Seattle's Shilshoe Bay Marina Leif Erikson statue, 2005.

Selected in 2004 by Seattle/Christchurch,New Zealand,Sister City Organization to create a 13 ' totem pole for the City of Christchurch.

Created a 88’x17’ exterior installation, entitled "Three Entertainers and Friends", for the White River Amphitheater on the Muckleshoot Reservation, Auburn, Wash. Completed in 2003.

2000, commissioned by Recreation Eqipment, Inc., to create a carved panel for retail store in Tokyo, Japan.

1996 recipient of a commission for two carved panels for the new Recreational Equipment, Inc. flagship store in Seattle, Wash.

Constructed an interior and exterior art installation for the Puyallup Indian Reservation in Tacoma, Wash., 1993.

Recipient of a commission from the Washingon State Arts Commission, under the Folk Arts/Apprenticeship Program.

Dennis Katzeek, Chilkat-Tlingit, learned construction of a bentwood drum, 1993.

One of six artist finalists, awarded $1000 to prepare proposals for artwork of six existing park-and-ride lots under Metro Arts Program, 1993.
